An engine's intake manifold is often overlooked in favor of carburetors, throttle bodies and camshafts. However, the intake manifold plays an important role in the ability of the engine to produce power. An intake manifold's sole purpose is to direct fuel to each of the engine's cylinders. Not all manifolds perform this task the same way. For this reason, one type of manifold may be suitable for a particular application but not for another. Select a manifold that will further the intended purpose of the engine.

Mute the speaker Listen to this using a male or female voice M/F Select a single-plane manifold to maximize top-end power, or a dual-plane manifold to maximize low-end power.

Mute the speaker Listen to this using a male or female voice M/F Choose an intake manifold that produces the most power at the engine's intended RPM range. Intake manifolds generally produce power in ranges of idle to 5,500 RPM; 2,500 to 6,500 RPM; and 3,500 to 8,500 RPM.

Mute the speaker Listen to this using a male or female voice M/F As a general rule, the more the vehicle will be used for street driving, the lower the RPM range should be. If the vehicle will be used primarily for race purposes, consider a manifold with a higher range.

Mute the speaker Listen to this using a male or female voice M/F Measure the height of the stock intake manifold with a ruler, and compare that measurement to the height of the new manifold to ensure that the new manifold will fit underneath the vehicle's hood without requiring modification.
